Coming from an engineering background I have gone a step further and enlarged the holes in the plate. Err 05 Built-in Flash Obstruction It has really worked for me. Retighten the screws and put the metal cover back on, and your flash should work again.

There are various methods you can use to apply it (toothpick, WD-40 straw, Q-tip etc). This is a great idea and is basically the same concept of cleaning out the dust in the flash mechanisms.
